Optical Toys

Laura Hayes and John Howard Wileman Exhibit of Optical Toys

For CyberARTS we were asked to take a look at this gallery of optical devices. I think that these toys are really interesting. I find it interesting that these toys are made out of wood. I like the
Stereoscope the best because I've used one and they are really interesting. It makes the image you are looking at appear 3D. This happens because there are two simular images placed side by side but postitioned slighty different. This tricks your eye causing you to see a 3D image.

NFB Animation

A few weeks ago in cyberARTS we took a trip to the National Film Board to do a workshop on clay animation. Here is a link to our animations. My groups animation is "Kitty Love".

NFB Animations

I thought I wouldn't like animation but it turned out to be really fun. It takes lot of patience which I have little of for time consuming tasks but it was really fun!

Pinhole Photography!

Hey Everyone,

Recently for my cyberarts class we took a trip to a photography studio. We learned about pinhole photography and made our own pinhole cameras. Pinhole photography is pretty much what it sound likes, using a pinhole to take photos. What you do to create a pinhole camera is make or find a light tight container that can open and make a pinhole in the container. The pinhole acts as your apperature (where the light comes in or the lens). You create a shutter (to block the light when your not capturing a photo) by using some sort of light tight material.
On this field trip we made cameras out of tin cans. To make them light tight we spray painted the inside matte black and sealed any area light could come through with black electrical tape. We drilled a hole in the side of the can to be covered with the real pinhole. We made a pinhole in the cut out bottom of a tart tray and aligned the drilled hole and pinhole. From there we taped the tart tray bottom to the can a placed a piece of electrical tape over the pinhole as the shutter. All we had to do is place a piece of photo sensitive paper opposite the pinhole inside the can, go outside and take a picture by letting light in the through the pinhole!

Here are two other Pinhole artists I found to be interesting on the web.
Wanda Scott
Katie Cooke

I had a great time learning to use a dark room and to take pinhole photos. If you ever get an opportunity to use a pinhole camera, USE IT. I feel pinhole photography opens a whole new artistic world to those who use it. Try it out!

Camera Angles

This photo represents camera angles. It was taken at a low angle to make the bricks appear taller and bigger. It could also represent texture or lines.

Lines

This photo represents lines. The spokes of the bike wheels create horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. This photo also has a lot of texture, looking at the grass and the tires.

Linear Perspective

The photo represents linear perspective. The bar shows you depth and dimension, leading your eye inwards. This photo can also represent light and shadow looking at the side walls.

Rule of Thirds

This photo represent the rule of thirds. The photo is divided into thirds, he water tower and then two sections of sky. The photo could also represent texture if you look at the trees or light and shadow if you look at the water tower.

Texture

This photo represents texture. You can tell that the grass is textured and sticking up. THis photo cold also represent linear perspective.

Composition in Photography - Mood

Mood is the feeling a picture invokes. A photographer can portray their mood or a mood they want the viewer to feel by photographing different elements. Specific elements evoke different feelings. For example an image of the sun and a blue sky can convey warmth and happiness. Fog might convey anxiety or mystery. One person may feel something different when seeing a picture then another depending on who they are.Losevsky Pavel

Composition in Photography - Selective Focus

Selective Focus is when you put emphasize or isolate one main part of the photo by using depth of field. One thing in the picture stands out while the background is either blurred or dull. To create selective focus you can use larger aperture to reduce the zone in front and behind of the main focal point.

"Photo District News article"

The Girl Project Lets Teens Reveal Their World

This article talks about a project that is giving girls in America aged 13-17 the chance to influence the world. Photographer Kate Engelbrecht is giving these girls one disposable Kodak camera to take pictures of the things in their world. The girls were asked to take pictures of things that meant something to them then send the camera back so their photos could be placed in a book and travelling exhibition.

Many girls are sending in pictures of their friends, nature and bits of meaningful text from posters proving that not all teen girls are the stereo-typical boy crazy type. I think this article is important because it shows that people are so much more than what they seem and it shows that young girls are not all media followers.

I like this article because it shows a truthful side to people. I can relate to this because many times I have been thought of as something that I was not because of a stereotype.

This article talks about the things I want to photograph exactly. I want to take photos of things that can influence people and that people can connect with. I want to show people real things not an illusion of what should be real.

Blog Assignment #2 - Graphic Design Link

For this assignment we were asked to post an inspirational/helpful/informative graphic design site.
I chose this one. http://www.gdc.net/

This site shows the work of other graphic designers, posts information to help you learn information about graphic design and has articles on all things graphic design. I think its pretty cool and can be useful if you have questions. I really like the GDC@50 posters part of the site. The art is amazing. http://www.gdc.net/designers/features/articles114.php

Logo Assignnment

These are my two final combined (pictography and typography) logos made for a recent assignment in cyber arts class . I think these logos are good and are attractive to the eye but I think if I had more time I would have been able to create a combined logo that would represent what my company did better.

My company is called "Rocker_Girly Creations". We specialize in graphic design, different mediums of art and creative writing. The lynx represents my company because they are fast, intelligent, graceful and just over all really cool animals!

I used a lot of curving lines to create a graceful structure but also used straight lines to create strength. I used textured lines to create fur. In the colour version I used the colour green to attract attention and to also show that "Rocker_Girly Creations" is an eco-friendly place.

Inspirational Sites

One of my favourite websites to visit is www.mikasounds.com . This is the website for one of my favourite musical artists. It is amazing! Right now the site is formed as a blog but I think the graphics are really cool. The pictures stand out and are very unique. Every few days Mika posts new videos or graphic drawings. There is always something new. Since Mika draws the cartoons himself and with his sister I admire his creative talents even more.
CHECK IT OUT!

A second inspirational site is created by my friend Payal. It is a site that focuses on blends made in photoshop and blend making contests. I think that it is an amazing site and that webmasters are very talented! TAKE A LOOK!

Chesspiece

Our second big cyberARTS assignment was to draw a chess piece of our choice. We had to consider the composition, proportion, use of line, value and movement of our chess piece and back round. Once we were finished drawing we photographed the picture and adjusted the contrast and brightness. I chose to draw a bishop.

I placed the rook in the centre of the paper and made it large so your eye would go to it first. To draw the chess piece's proportions as accurately as possible I drew a grid box to measure out the proportions. To create movement in the back round I used thick diagonal, curved and straight lines with varied value and thickness. They lead your eye around the page and towards the chess piece. The value of the lines vary from very light to very dark to seperate lines and depth.
When I photographed the picture I had trouble with a glare along the darkest points. I used photoshop to adjust the brightness and contrast so it would look as good as it could be.

Vegetarians , Vegans and Eco-Activists

Hey Everyone,
For those who don't know me real well you wouldn't know that I'm somewhat of a modern hippie. I love animals and nature therefore I'm into saving the environment and promoting animal rights.
Now as you read your probably wondering why I am telling everyone this.
The point of this post is to give praise to Vegetarians and Vegans. Once again for those who don't know me, I've been trying to become a vegetarian for months. I just want to say good job to every vegetarian and vegan out there. It is very hard to live in an all meat eaters world even if it is easier in this era to do so. Thank you for being aware of animal rights and being Eco-friendly. I haven't given up the vegetarian life yet and I hope I don't even though it is hard. Have faith in me everyone please.

"The Conversion of St.Paul" Caravaggio

As an assignment for CyberARTS, we were asked to pick a piece of art and talk about the Imitationalism, Emotional and Formalism qualities of it. I picked "The Conversion of St.Paul" by Caravaggio.
Imitationalism Qualities
This painting is very realistic. The two men and horse look insanely life-like. They all have very detailed qualities especially in the face. The man leading the horse has very precise details in his face showing his aging skin and thinning hair. Caravaggio made accurate use of real space, showing how far away and how close the things in the painting are.
Emotional Qualities
By using dark browns, reds, deep greens and oranges the painting gives off a feeling of sadness, anger and drama. The horse and the man behind the horse look calm but the man on the floor looks in pain or trapped in fear. His eyes look shut aand peaceful but the way his body is postitioned looks painful. The horses legs look tense.

Formalism Qualities
Caravaggio balanced the painting out well. The top feels a little bit heavier because of the horse and the old man being placed together but it is evened out by the man sprawled out on the floor. The artist created rhythm and movement with the lines that create the men and horses arms and legs. The colours work well with each other, looking like they all belong. Caravaggio hows the figures and objects in 3-D by using value to create texture.

I believe Caravaggio created a wonderful painting that can be liked by many people. Although not everyone will like such a realistic picture, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Hey,
I just thought I would let everyone know that I am working on linking my piczo site here so I can post more albums of my work and reach more people. Unfortunately, my site is very old and the piczo owners just updated the way everything is set up. This caused everything on my site to stop working properly. I have deleted all my pages since they do not work and I am working on rebuilding them. Until then stay posted!

P.S. Check out The Klaxons on youtube! I really like their music. OR If you want to see a really cool blog check out another one of favourite artists... Mika!!! He has a great blog! Here's a link: http://www.mikasounds.com/
